Job 38-42 Submit to the Lord

SUBMIT TO THE SOVEREIGN LORD
Job 38:1-42:17                July 16 2006

The Lord addressed Job’s friends and expressed
His displeasure over their misrepresentations
of Him. They had reduced God to a formula and
a cliche. the Lord ordered them to offer a
sacrifice for their sins and instructed Job to
pray for them. After Job prayed for his friends,
the lord restored his fortunes and family. Job
lived and additional 140 years.

1. Listening To God (Job 38:1-4)

Job 38:1   Then the LORD answered Job out of the
whirlwind: 38:2   “Who is this that darkens counsel
by words without knowledge? 38:3   Gird up your
loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall
declare to me. 38:4   “Where were you when I laid
the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have
understanding.

In previous chapters, Job’s friends had offered
him reams of rhetoric about God. All of their
words combined did little or nothing to comfort
Job. However, when Job and His critics fin all
exhausted their supply of words and put away
their simplistic explanations – God spoke.
sometimes we fail to hear what God has to say
because of our addiction to noise .Unless we order
our days to “be silent in the presence of the Lord”
(Zeph. 1:7), we will not hear His voice.

2. Submitting To God (Job 42:1-6)

Job 42:1   Then Job answered the LORD: 42:2   “I know
that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours
can be thwarted. 42:3   ‘Who is this that hides counsel
without knowledge?’ Therefore I have uttered what I
did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which
I did not know. 42:4   ‘Hear, and I will speak; I will
question you, and you declare to me.’ 42:5   I had heard
of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees
you; 42:6   therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust
and ashes.”

Job confessed that he had heard rumors about God.
Prior to God’s revelation of Himself to Job, he only
knew God from a distance. However, all of that
changed when God spoke to Job out of the storm.
But now, said Job my eyes have seen you. In other
words, Job now knew God in a more intimate way. He
had a new awareness of God and a deeper insight
into His character and attributes.

3. Interceding Before God (Job 42:7-9)

Job 42:7   After the LORD had spoken these words to Job,
the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite: “My wrath is
kindled against you and against your two friends; for you
have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.
42:8   Now therefore take seven bulls and seven rams, and
go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt
offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you, for I will
accept his prayer not to deal with you according to your
folly; for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my
servant Job has done.” 42:9   So Eliphaz the Temanite and
Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did
what the LORD had told them; and the LORD accepted Job’s
prayer.

The three men did as the Lord instructed. they did not
argue with God; nor did they express any reluctance to
follow through on His divine orders. The, without a
hint of bitterness or revenge, Job graciously
interceded for each one of his friends who had spoken
falsely about both him and God . Job, along with the Lord,
had forgiven his friends.

4. Relying On God (Job 42:10-12a)

Job 42:10   And the LORD restored the fortunes of Job when
he had prayed for his friends; and the LORD gave Job twice as
much as he had before. 42:11   Then there came to him all his
brothers and sisters and all who had known him before, and
they ate bread with him in his house; they showed him
sympathy and comforted him for all the evil that the LORD had
brought upon him; and each of them gave him a piece of money
and a gold ring. 42:12   The LORD blessed the latter days of Job
more than his beginning;

After Job had prayed for his friends, something wonderful
happened. After enduring unimaginable losses, constant
pain, days or weeks of confusion and misery, the
condemnation of his friends, a litany of questions from
God, and his own repentance and submission, Job received
an incredible and unexpected reward: the Lord restored and
doubled his wealth.

Summary :

One important function of the remarkable ending
of the Book of Job is to show the reality that not all suffering
is the direct result of the suffering individual’s sins. The
lesson is that suffering may be mysterious, but it need not
rob us of our faith in sovereign, loving God of all.

Job 32-37 Discipline

RESPOND POSITIVELY TO GOD’S DISCIPLINE
Job 32:1-37:24                    July 9 2006

Elihu , anew voice , entered the debate. He was the
youngest of those present and spoke a total of four
times. Elihu’s messages form a transition from the
words of Job and his critics to the words of God.
He rebuked Job’s friends for making unsupported
accusations against Job and addressed Job’s
complaint that God would not speak to him. Elihu
pointed out that God speaks to people through
dreams, through pain , and through others.

1. Receive God’s Revelation (Job 33:13-16)

Job 33:13   Why do you contend against him, saying, ‘He
will answer none of my words’? 33:14   For God speaks
in one way, and in two, though people do not perceive it.
33:15   In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep
sleep falls on mortals, while they slumber on their beds,
33:16   then he opens their ears, and terrifies them with
warnings,

GOD’S COMMUNICATING TO PEOPLE THROUGH DREAMS
seems to have decreased since the coming of the
Holy Spirit . God’s most common means of speaking
to His people today seem to be through the
Holy Spirit’s use of their consistent Bible study,
reflection on the connection of life experiences to
biblical teachings, and prayers. However, we must
be sensitive to both usual and unusual ways the
Lord may be speaking to us.

2. Recognize God’s Reasons (Job 33:17-22)

Job 33:17   that he may turn them aside from their deeds,
and keep them from pride, 33:18   to spare their souls from
the Pit, their lives from traversing the River. 33:19   They
are also chastened with pain upon their beds, and with
continual strife in their bones, 33:20   so that their lives
loathe bread, and their appetites dainty food. 33:21   Their
flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen; and their
bones, once invisible, now stick out. 33:22   Their souls
draw near the Pit, and their lives to those who bring death.

Elihu offered some generalized statements about how
God uses divine discipline to give those who have
transgressed opportunities to repent. His statements
are directed at Job and express the same flawed idea
held by Job’s three friends. While this view has truth
in it ,it is incomplete because it fails to allow for
exceptions, for the impact of satanic evil in the world,
and for the instructive and redemptive disciplinary
action of the Lord.

3. Respond To God’s Reprimand (Job 36:8-12)

Job 36:8   And if they are bound in fetters and caught in the
cords of affliction, 36:9   then he declares to them their
work and their transgressions, that they are behaving arrogantly.
36:10   He opens their ears to instruction, and commands that
they return from iniquity. 36:11   If they listen, and serve him,
they complete their days in prosperity, and their years in
pleasantness. 36:12   But if they do not listen, they shall perish
by the sword, and die without knowledge.

This passage is not the guarantee of a health and wealth
gospel. Rather, it is a promise that a life lived in obedience
to God is better than a life that dishonors Him. No amount
of wealth can buy the kind of peace and joy that are the
results of living a life pleasing to God.

Summary:

Elihu introduced himself (Job 32:1-22) and then asked
Job to listen to what he had to say (Job 33:1-2). He promised
to speak honestly to him (Job 33:3-5) as a fellow human
being (Job 33:6-7).
Elihu Quoted some of Job’s own words back to him, an
indication that he had been listening to the previous
exchanges between Job and his critics. He paraphrased
Job’s assertion of innocence and complaint that God had
treated him like an enemy (Job 33:8-11). Elihu told Job
that he was wrong in what he had said about God and
reminded him that “God is greater than man” (Job 33:12).

Job 29-31 Action

ANALYZE YOUR ACTIONS
Job 29:1-31:40            July 2 2006

Job turned the spotlight on himself and examined
every area of his life. Intent on affirming his
innocence, Job examined his marriage, his business,
his home, his relationship to his employees and his
community , his attitude toward money, his spiritual
life, his treatment of enemies, and his stewardship
of the land and resources entrusted to him by God .
Job then reaffirmed his personal integrity and rested
his case.

1. Have I Been Dishonest Or Unfaithful ?
(Job 31:5-6,9-10)

Job 31:5   “If I have walked with falsehood, and my
foot has hurried to deceit — 31:6   let me be weighed
in a just balance, and let God know my integrity!—
31:9   “If my heart has been enticed by a woman, and
I have lain in wait at my neighbor’s door; 31:10   then
let my wife grind for another, and let other men kneel
over her.

Merchants in ancient times used scales to transact
business. Buyers depended on the honesty of
merchants in order to get a fair deal. The Bible
states that God hates dishonest scales (Prov.11:1;
20:23). Prophets often spoke against those who used
false weights and Measures to cheat unsuspecting
buyers (Hos. 12:7;Amos 8:5; Mic. 6:11).

2. Have I Been Arrogant Or Selfish? (Job 31:13-17)

Job 31:13   “If I have rejected the cause of my male or
female slaves, when they brought a complaint against
me; 31:14   what then shall I do when God rises up?
When he makes inquiry, what shall I answer him? 31:15
Did not he who made me in the womb make them? And
did not one fashion us in the womb? 31:16   “If I have
withheld anything that the poor desired, or have caused
the eyes of the widow to fail, 31:17   or have eaten my
morsel alone, and the orphan has not eaten from it —

In his third speech , Eliphaz had accused Job of
taking advantage of the needy (Job 22:6-9). although
he provided no supporting evidence to substantiate
his charges, Eliphaz had nevertheless accused Job of
a multitude of sins against others. Job later pointed
out that he had rescued the poor and the fatherless
(Job 29:12), helped widows (Job 29:13) and the Lame
(Job 29:15), assisted the needy (Job 29:16), and
defended the helpless against their oppressors
(Job 29:17).

3. Have I Turned From God? (Job 31:24-28)

Job 31:24   “If I have made gold my trust, or called fine
gold my confidence; 31:25   if I have rejoiced because
my wealth was great, or because my hand had gotten
much;  31:26   if I have looked at the sun when it shone,
or the moon moving in splendor, 31:27   and my heart has
been secretly enticed, and my mouth has kissed my hand;
31:28   this also would be an iniquity to be punished by
the judges, for I should have been false to God above.

Job had the right attitude toward money. When it
comes to money , we must keep in mind that it is God
who gives us the ability to produce wealth
(Deut. 8:17-18). We must also not allow wealth to
lull us into a false sense of security or into thinking
that it can insulate us from trouble (Prov.18:11). And
we must not put our hope in wealth (1 Tim. 6:17) or
allow riches to fool us into thinking that we do not
need God (Rev. 3:17). Eliphaz had earlier advised Job
not to put his trust in wealth (Job 22: 24-25). Job
affirmed that he had never placed his trust in  his
riches or worshiped wealth.

4. Have I Gloated Or Been Hypocritical?
(Job 31:29-30,33-34)

Job 31:29   “If I have rejoiced at the ruin of those who
hated me, or exulted when evil overtook them — 31:30
I have not let my mouth sin by asking for their lives with
a curse — if I have concealed my transgressions as others
do, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom, 31:34   because I
stood in great fear of the multitude, and the contempt of
families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and did not
go out of doors —

Job had enemies. Because he was wealthy , no  doubt
some people envied and hated him. Enemies, by their
very nature, can disrupt our lives by creating all sorts
of problems. Yet Job affirmed that he had never rejoiced
at an enemy’s distress or misfortune; nor had he
become excited when trouble visited his enemies
(Prov. 24:17-18).
Unlike Job, people are not always willing to acknowledge
their sins or to see their sins for what they really are.
Some people try to dismiss their sins with excuses. Other
try to rationalize their sins by saying, “Everybody is doing
it.” Still other keep silent about sins or try to cover
them up.

Summary:

Job was so certain of his innocence that he opened
every area of his life to scrutiny. He stated that he had
made a covenant with his eyes not to look upon a woman
with lustful thoughts and desires (Job 31:1). He understood
the relationship between lust and adultery (Matt. 5:28) and
did not want to displease God inwardly or outwardly
(Job 31:2-4). He was serious about being a faithful husband
and living a holy life.

Job 22-28 Wisdom

LOOK TO GOD FOR WISDOM
Job 22:1-28:28 June 25 2006

Job now turned his attention to the matter of wisdom.
While his friends had knowledge (intellectual information),
they lacked wisdom (spiritual perception). Job said that
wisdom is not found by digging shafts deep into earth; nor
can it be purchased at a market. true wisdom begins with
the fear of the Lord. God’s wisdom, not that of his friends,
would help Job face his perplexing situation.

1. Recognize Human Ability’s Limits (Job 28:1-4,12)

Job 28:1 “Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for
gold to be refined. 28:2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and
copper is smelted from ore. 28:3 Miners put an end to
darkness, and search out to the farthest bound the ore in
gloom and deep darkness. 28:4 They open shafts in a valley
away from human habitation; they are forgotten by travelers,
they sway suspended, remote from people. 28:12 “But where
shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of
understanding?

Job concluded his discourse on mining by asking where
wisdom and understanding can be found. His question
implies that people may achieve much by sheer will human
ingenuity, and arduous work; but their own efforts to attain
wisdom for coping with life far short of the wisdom
available only in and from the Lord. Wisdom is not
discovered by digging shafts into the earth (Job 28:1-11).
Wisdom, Job pointed out later, come from another source.

2. Acknowledge Wisdom’s Value (Job 28:13,15-16)

Job 28:13 Mortals do not know the way to it, and it is not
found in the land of the living. 28:15 It cannot be gotten for
gold, and silver cannot be weighed out as its price. 28:16 It
cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in precious onyx or
sapphire.

Job mentioned numerous earthly treasures, including gold,
silver, onyx, sapphire, articles of fine gold, coral, quartz,
pearls, and topaz. If wisdom could be purchased with riches
such as these, the rich would be the wisest people on earth.
Yet even if a person possessed all of these precious metals
and jewels in vast quantities, the treasures would not be
sufficient to purchase wisdom. The wisdom that comes
from God is exceedingly rare and much more valuable than
all earthly treasures.

3. Seek Wisdom’s Guidance (Job 28:20-23,26-28)

Job 28:20 “Where then does wisdom come from? And where is
the place of understanding? 28:21 It is hidden from the eyes of
all living, and concealed from the birds of the air. 28:22
Abaddon and Death say, We have heard a rumor of it with our
ears.’ 28:23 “God understands the way to it, and he knows its
place. 28:26 when he made a decree for the rain, and a way for
the thunderbolt; 28:27 then he saw it and declared it; he
established it, and searched it out. 28:28 And he said to
humankind, Truly, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to
depart from evil is understanding.’ ”

Job understood that only God’s wisdom, rather than that of
his friends, could help him face his perplexing situation.
However, while God reveals His wisdom to those who faithfully seek Him, that does not mean that He will reveal all the reasons behind what happens to us and those dear to us . The unlimited wisdom of infinite God is unattainable for limited, finite human beings.

Summary:

Chapter 28 is distinctive from any other in the Book of Job.
It is a beautifully composed poem in which Job meditated on
where wisdom can be found. Job had endured three blistering
cycles of speeches by friends who thought they were wise.
Although his friends possessed knowledge, they lacked the
wisdom to understand the reason for Job’s suffering. Their
human “wisdom” had failed to ease Job’s pain or to quiet his
restless anxieties and desperate longing for answers.

Job 15-21 Unfair

ACKNOWLEDGE THAT LIFE SEEM UNFAIR
Job 15:1-21:34 June 18 2006

Eliphaz challenged Job’s contention that the wicked
prosper in this life. He insisted that the wicked are
punished, implying that Job was suffering because
he had sinned. Job called Eliphaz and his friends
“miserable comforters” and maintained his innocence.
Job prayed that his blood would cry out and declare
his innocence if he died without being vindicated.
Bildad graphically described the fate of the wicked
and told Job that he was getting exactly what he
deserved.
Zophar told Job that he must surely be aware of the
end that awaits the wicked. Job responded by telling
Zophar that the wicked are not always overtaken by
punishment and the righteous do not always enjoy
prosperity.

1. People May Misjudge You (Job 15:5-6,9-10,20)

Job 15:5 For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you
choose the tongue of the crafty. 15:6 Your own mouth
condemns you, and not I; your own lips testify against you.
15:9 What do you know that we do not know? What do you
understand that is not clear to us? 15:10 The gray-haired
and the aged are on our side, those older than your father.
15:20 The wicked writhe in pain all their days, through all
the years that are laid up for the ruthless.

Although he had nothing new to say, Eliphaz opened the
second round of speeches (Job 15:1). after listening to
Job express his thoughts and wrestle with his doubts,
Eliphaz ran out of patience. He rolled up his sleeves and
struck Job with a series of brutal verbal blows,
attempting to prove him wrong.
Eliphaz misjudged Job’s motive and attitude behind his
responses to the friends’ counsel. He thought Job spoke
with deception and arrogance . Eliphaz, convinced job was
wrong, thought Job’s own words were sufficient to prove
his guilt.
Job was sad that his expression of faith in God were
ignored or discounted by his friends. His friends had failed
to ease his pain with their endless flow of foolish words.
They turned out to be “miserable comforters” (Job 16:2).

2. People May Ignore Your Statements (Job 16:19-21;
19:5-6,25-27)

Job 16:19 Even now, in fact, my witness is in heaven, and he
that vouches for me is on high. 16:20 My friends scorn me;
my eye pours out tears to God, 16:21 that he would maintain
the right of a mortal with God, as one does for a neighbor. 19:5
If indeed you magnify yourselves against me, and make my
humiliation an argument against me, 19:6 know then that God
has put me in the wrong, and closed his net around me. 19:25
For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will
stand upon the earth; 19:26 and after my skin has been thus
destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, 19:27 whom I
shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another.
My heart faints within me!

An advocate is a qualified individual who pleads on
another’s behalf. Unfortunately, his friends proved to be
more interested in accusing than in defending him. Job had
nowhere to turn but heaven and no one to turn to but God.

Job used the terms witness and advocate to describe the
one he hoped would come to his defense. The phrases in
heaven and in the heights indicate that Job was thinking in
terms of someone greater than a human being – perhaps a
divine redeemer. He longed for someone to arbitrate between
him and God.

Satan craftily administered additional hurt to job through his friends. Bildad and the other were guilty of adding to Job’s humiliation and feelings of worthlessness by their verbal mistreatment of him (Job 19:3-4) – a reminder of the power of our words.

Job repeated his belief that he would see God. He expected to be in hi flesh of body on that day when god Himself would vindicate him. The thought of that occasion filled his heart with joyful longing and anticipation. Job concluded his speech by warning his friends to beware of God’s punishment for the heartless way they had treated him (Job 19:28-29).

3. People May Seem To Go Unpunished (Job 21:7-9)

Job 21:7 Why do the wicked live on, reach old age, and grow
mighty in power? 21:8 Their children are established in their
presence, and their offspring before their eyes. 21:9 Their
houses are safe from fear, and no rod of God is upon them.

Job listen Patiently and then asked Zophar and his friends
to pay close attention to what he had to say (Job 21:1-3).
He told them that his complaint was against God (Job 21:4).
If only they would observe what was happening to him, they
too would shudder and tremble in horror (Job 21:5-6).
Job directly challenged Zophar’s assertions concerning the
wicked. He pointed out that the wicked do not always die
young (Job 21:7-16), do not always suffer calamity (Job 21:
17-21),and do not always die a hard death (Job 21:22-26).

Summary :

Job argued that if bad things happen to good people,
then we should not be surprised that good things can happen
to bad people. We simply cannot account for or explain
everything that happens to the righteous or the unrighteous .
We must trust God in the face of what we cannot understand
or explain and wait for the day when :we will know fully”
(1 cor.13:12). We can hope in the god of justice, whether or
not we see His justice effected in this life.

Job 3-14 Explanation

CAREFULLY EVALUATE EXPLANATIONS
Job 3:1-14:22 June 11 2006

Job rejected the explanation of his friends. He
called them worthless physicians who were unable
to give a proper diagnosis and branded their counsel
as worthless as ashes. Job asked God to reveal to
him any sin in his life , including any he might have
committed in his youth. He lamented that the future
looked hopeless and asked God to give him some
peace.

1. Flawed Appeal To Justice (Job 4:6-7 ; 6:2-3,24)

Job 4:6 Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the
integrity of your ways your hope? 4:7 “Think now, who
that was innocent ever perished? Or where were the
upright cut off? 6:2 “O that my vexation were weighed,
and all my calamity laid in the balances! 6:3 For then it
would be heavier than the sand of the sea; therefore my
words have been rash. 6:24 “Teach me, and I will be
silent; make me understand how I have gone wrong.

Eliphaz had assumed that Job was guilty until
proven innocent, but failed to offer any specific
charges. Job declared that he was not aware of
having done wrong and asked Eliphaz to prove his
case, saying that he could handle specific charges,
however painful (6:25) . Job pressed Eliphaz to look
carefully at his (Job’s) life and to point out any
injustices he had committed (6:28-30).

2. Flawed Appeal To Tradition (Job 8:4-8)

Job 8:4 If your children sinned against him, he delivered
them into the power of their transgression. 8:5 If you will
seek God and make supplication to the Almighty, 8:6 if you
are pure and upright, surely then he will rouse himself for
you and restore to you your rightful place. 8:7 Though your
beginning was small, your latter days will be very great. 8:8
“For inquire now of bygone generations, and consider what
their ancestors have found;

Bildad urged Job to ask or to learn from the discoveries
of previous generations. He was certain that the wisdom
of the past supported the advice he had given Job. Bildad
of the past supported the advice he had had given Job.
Bildad was right that their fathers had discovered the
principle that God blessed righteous living and punished
evil. However. that did not mean that Job’s suffering was
a direct result of specific sins.

3. Flawed Appeal To Logic (Job 11:6b,13-15; 13:4)

Job 11:6b Know then that God exacts of you less than your
guilt deserves. 11:13 “If you direct your heart rightly, you
will stretch out your hands toward him. 11:14 If iniquity is
in your hand, put it far away, and do not let wickedness reside
in your tents. 11:15 Surely then you will lift up your face
without blemish; you will be secure, and will not fear. 13:4
As for you, you whitewash with lies; all of you are worthless
physicians.

We must recognize that logical explanations about the
causes and uses of human suffering can be flawed because
no one can know all the facts of any particular case. In most
cases, it is wiser to remain silent (Prov.17:27-28) than to
risk making a bad situation worse.

4. Flawed Appeal To God (Job 13:15,18,23-24)

Job 13:15 See, he will kill me; I have no hope; but I will defend
my ways to his face. 13:18 I have indeed prepared my case; I
know that I shall be vindicated. 13:23 How many are my
iniquities and my sins? Make me know my transgression and my
sin. 13:24 Why do you hide your face, and count me as your enemy?

Job told his friend to ” pay close attention” to what he had to
say (13:17). He maintained his innocence and expressed his
longing to have his case tried before God. He had carefully
organized and prepared his case and was ready to present it
before the court of haven – certain that he would be vindicated.
Job said that if anyone could “indict” him he was prepared to
“be silent and die” (13:19).

Summary:
Just as words can hurt, they can also help . Proverbs 16:24 states, “Pleasant words are a honeycomb: sweet to the taste and health to the body”. Hurting people can benefit from words pleasantly orchestrated into symphonies of encouragement.

SINGING OF LOVE

Song of Songs 1:1-8:14 August 27 2006

On one occasion the young woman became anxious as
she waited for her husband to return to her. She praised
his appearance and character. Her anxiety turned to
peace when her husband returned and showered her
with beautiful words of love. BOTH HUSBAND AND
WIFE MUTUAL EXCHANGES OF PRAISE.
The young couple affirmed their mutual and exclusive
commitment to each another. This commitment gave
their love an unrelenting strength , passion, and
durability.

1. Verbal Love (Song Of Songs 1:1,15-2:3)

Song 1:1 The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s. 1:15
Ah, you are beautiful, my love; ah, you are beautiful; your
eyes are doves. 1:16 Ah, you are beautiful, my beloved,
truly lovely. Our couch is green; 1:17 the beams of our
house are cedar, our rafters are pine. 2:1 I am a rose of
Sharon, a lily of the valleys. 2:2 As a lily among brambles,
so is my love among maidens. 2:3 As an apple tree among
the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among young men.
With great delight I sat in his shadow, and his fruit was
sweet to my taste.

The title of the Book of Song of Songs uses the
noun song twice. This is a Hebrew way of expressing
that which is the best – in this case, the finest of all of
the songs Solomon wrote (1 Kings 4:32). Song of
Songs is Solomon’s finest love song that celebrates
the God –given joy of love between a husband and
wife.

grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a raging flame. 8:7
Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown
it. If one offered for love all the wealth of his house, it
would be utterly scorned.

Solomon advised people to enjoy every minute if
being young. Young people should live their lives
within the boundaries of God’s revealed will
because they will one day give an account to God
for everything they have done.
Regardless of our age, we should continuously seek
to learn and to apply the truths of God’s Word.
Solomon concluded Ecclesiastes with sober advice –
“fear god and keep His commands” and live each
day with the knowledge that God “will bring every
act to judgment.”

1. Recognize God-Given Boundaries (Eccl. 11:9-10)

Eccl. 11:9 Rejoice, young man, while you are young, and
let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Follow
the inclination of your heart and the desire of your eyes,
but know that for all these things God will bring you into
judgment. 11:10 Banish anxiety from your mind, and put
away pain from your body; for youth and the dawn of life
are vanity.

Solomon also advised the young to put away pain
from their bodies. This is an admonishment to avoid
the destructive sins of the flesh and , instead , to
cultivate healthy and holy habits. Those who embrace
destructive habits in their youth lay a foundation for
problems in their older years. We should instead live
each day to the fullest , accepting both the challenges
and opportunities each day brings , because youth
and the prime of life are fleeting .

2. Remember God Every Day (Eccl. 12:1-5)

Eccl. 12:1 Remember your creator in the days of your
youth, before the days of trouble come, and the years
draw near when you will say, “I have no pleasure in them”;
12:2 before the sun and the light and the moon and the
stars are darkened and the clouds return with the rain; 12:3
in the day when the guards of the house tremble, and the
strong men are bent, and the women who grind cease working
because they are few, and those who look through the
windows see dimly; 12:4 when the doors on the street are
shut, and the sound of the grinding is low, and one rises up
at the sound of a bird, and all the daughters of song are
brought low; 12:5 when one is afraid of heights, and terrors
are in the road; the almond tree blossoms, the grasshopper
drags itself along and desire fails; because all must go to
their eternal home, and the mourners will go about the
streets;

Solomon listed four characteristics of aging with
interesting descriptions. First , the phrase guardians
of the house most likely refers to hands that tremble
in old age. Second, the strong men may refer to the
major muscle groups of the legs and back that begin
to weaken with age and cause one to stoop rather than
to stand up straight . Third, the grinders are teeth that
cease to chew food because they are few. Fourth, the
ones who see dimly as they watch through the
windows are the eyes.

3. Revere and Obey God (Eccl. 12:13-14)

Eccl. 12:13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear
God, and keep his commandments; for that is the whole duty
of everyone. 12:14 For God will bring every deed into
judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.

Solomon search for meaning in life under the sun.
Guided by human wisdom , Solomon explored a variety
of avenues that looked promising but proved
disappointing . Every earthly experience and material
possession left Solomon empty. After his exhaustive
search for meaning, Solomon announced the conclusion
of the matter. Life’s ultimate meaning cannot be found
by human wisdoms; only God can give meaning to life.

Summary:
Therefore , we should live each day revering and
obeying God and delighting in personal fellowship with
Him, for those are the purposes for which He created us.
By revering and obeying God and enjoying daily fellowship
with Him, we advance His redemptive purposes and , in the
process, experience life’s greatest sense of fulfillment.
